beka stays in rochester : TRADER JOE’S!!!

Today, I slipped on the sidewalk, fell on my face, chipped the mug I was carrying, and spilled yogurt all over myself and the pavement. I’m also in the process of working a very full day, from 6am this morning until whenever tonight’s wedding ends. I don’t remember the last time I slept a normal amount of hours. I am, in a nutshell, one hott mess.

All of those elements may have contributed to the fact that I nearly shed tears of (insert any emotion here) upon reading this news:

Trader Joe’s grocery store will open store in Pittsford Plaza

OH MY WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can hardly believe it!!! No more traveling for groceries! All is right in the world. Specifically, in my corner of the world. Which is Rochester. Rochester! The city I never wanted to stay in but now don’t know if I’ll ever be able to leave now that Wegmans AND Trader Joe’s both reside here too.

This is going to be my go-to good news whenever I need an uplifting thought for the next year. The joy will last that long…and will then be replaced by the actual joy of shopping at Trader Joe’s on a regular basis!

daily word: “Change the thoughts, and you change the person. If today’s thoughts are tomorrow’s actions, what happens when we fill our minds with thoughts of God’s love? Will standing beneath a downpour of his grace change the way we feel about others? Paul says absolutely! It’s not enough to keep the bad stuff out. We’ve got to let the good stuff in.” – Max Lucado, A Love Worth Giving

daily sweat: walking here, there, and everywhere while I was sans-vehicle for a bit today.

daily dish: it’s been so long since I had one of these:

Thanks for bringing me back to the good ‘ole days of breakfast sandwiches, Tim Hortons! I have to admit…I missed my morning bowl of oatmeal/cereal/something desserty disguised as something breakfasty…but it was good to switch things up a bit!

daily word: So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out. Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word. Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.” – Hebrews 10:22-25 (MSG)

daily sweat: a walk with the kids this morning, and the aforementioned bus chases this evening

daily dish: another favorite:

oatmeal with protein powder, dark chocolate peanut butter, and bananas. It’s the best kind of comfort food.

beka stays authentic : just because today was weird

Because it’s been such a unique day, and because I’m avoiding cleaning my apartment sure you’d love to hear about, I thought I’d jot down some of the finer points:

  • Last night, I had a dream that I unexpectedly met Mike McCarthy. I was so overcome with awe that I could barely speak two words and consequently just mumbled and smiled a lot (which is likely what would occur were we ever to meet in real life). I was also very concerned that I was adorned in baggy and outdated Green Bay attire, and that the shades of green on my sweatshirt and sweatpants did not match. I think this was a subliminal message that a) I should wear things that start with the word “sweat” less often and b) I need new Green Bay attire. Afterwards, I took the Lakers on a bus tour of Niskayuna and made sure to point out to Kobe and Phil and Pau all the local hotspots, like my old church. I’m not sure how or why these two dreams intertwined, but there you have it.
  • Can someone invent a new daily transportation device that is not a car? Because between repairs and tickets this current system is just not working for me.
  • I had Oreos and milk for the first time in FOREVER today. The aforementioned vehicular woes may have been the catalyst for this particular snacking decision, but no matter the reason I’m glad it happened.
  • You know what really would have made all things right in the world today, food-wise? Chick-fil-A. I think I’ve been really rational about my newly-planted Rochester roots. I even made a list of all of the wonders that reside in Rochester! But if we could adjust anything, I’d ask for a Chick-fil-A to move in down the street, preferably right next to Starbucks. Girlfriend needs some Chick-n-Strips and waffle fries, pronto. (And, in the interest of full disclosure, a peach milkshake, too.)
  • Today the kids and I tried to make mini rice krispy treat pumpkins with almonds as the stump. It was semi-successful. When we were done with the mini pumpkins (i.e. 60 seconds later) we used the rest to make this guy:

We were much more excited about eating the chocolate chips than making a face with them, but I think he turned out well regardless.

  • The “what to read?!” question was answered today when I found out that Marisa de los Santos has a new book out, Falling Together. I may have started hyperventilating. That may have been a slight overreaction. But I absolutely adored Love Walked In and Belong to Me and have been waiting with bated breath for a new release. I’ve already requested it from the library!
  • Just in case the jury was out on my nerd status, while I was at the library I also took out the Ken Burns documentary on the National Parks and the Martha’s Master Chef’s DVD. You can call the jury back in for another vote. I’m sure they’ll be quick to reach a verdict.
  • Today, I became acquainted with the Rochester bus system. And it became apparent that it doesn’t matter whether I am driving a vehicle or just a passenger inside of one: my propensity to get lost remains the same. I had no problem finding the first bus, but after that it all went downhill. I must have been standing at the wrong bus stop because the transfer I was expecting to arrive never did. So in my provential wisdom I decided to take a bus to a nearby street and walk home instead of just waiting for/finding the bus that stops about 100 feet away from my apartment. Instead I took the long route, which would have been a much shorter if I hadn’t gotten off of the bus 3 stops too early and walked the half mile it would have driven me.
  • I’m also glad that when I left my car at the shop this afternoon, I decided to move my umbrella from the floor to the passenger seat, just to tidy things up a bit. To actually take the umbrella along never occurred to me, an error in judgement I had time to ponder during the soggy walk home.
  • Let’s be honest: I had brownies for dinner.
  • And an oatmeal raisin cookie.
  • Is it Sunday yet?

daily word: 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? – Matthew 6:25-27

daily sweat: Favorite workout day of the week! Cardio kickboxing/strength circuit/new to yoga class. Love it.

daily dish: Just my favorite dish today…and possibly ever.

1 frozen banana

3 Tbsp protein powder

1 Tbsp oats

1/4 cup milk

Blend in a food processor, top with blueberries, devour. SO GOOD.

*I took 18 pictures of this because I had it for breakfast and dinner…but NONE of them uploaded. Thanks for nothing, Android.

daily mile(s):

Day 32: the view from here

Day 33: you had me at hello

(I still think Denver was my favorite place of all on the trip (other than the obvious favorite, Green Bay. Duh.))

Day 34: in bloom

Day 35: expect the unexpected

(And I still love that sign.)

Day 36: i was ready for some football

(Different year, different time zone, different end result…same Sunday routine.)

beka stays authentic : (fun)loving my team

I seriously love football more than I can explain. And to not only love the game, but to love a team like the Packers…it’s a double abundance. Especially when they have a game like they did last night against the Falcons, rallying from 14 points down and significant injuries to get the win. Even though I love the integrity and determination of a team that can beat all of the odds, I think I love the Packers most because of what you’ll see and hear if you watch this video. They’re down to earth. There is no room for drama. They have fun. Favorite moment: the touchdown debate between Aaron Rodgers, Mike McCarthy, and the ref.

I love my team.
