oh, perspective. you are so beautiful. thankful for this post, especially for this much-needed reminder: “I’m sick of not being inspired. So many of us are blessed to own these super cool things that put a rectangle around our worlds and then freeze them in time. Oh my gosh!”
it should surprise no one that i’m already working on my 2012 goals. expect a post detailing them soon, probably before 2011 comes to a close. but in the mean time…one of the HUGE ones?…to (somehow) attend a making things happen workshop.
how can you not celebrate what tim tebow is doing? even if you disagree with his faith or his style of play, he is making game-changing things happen on the field while simultaneously making life-changing things happen off the field. you go, timmy.
how can you not celebrate what the packers are doing? even if it makes you break out in cold sweats every sunday? and inordinately apprehensive about thanksgiving?
loving this new (to me) food blog…the sweet potato stuffed baked apples?! oh yes. it’s on.
Well friends, this weekend left me feeling highly disgruntled. Which is sad, because there was a whole lot of good that went on, and we’ll get to that soon.
In retrospect, I set myself up for failure. I had a huge and highly unrealistic list of things to do this weekend. On top of that, a bunch of the things that I did do were unsuccessful. To the tune of 3 out of 4 recipe flops. (Really, is there anything more frustrating than finding a recipe you’re excited about, spending time and resources on it, anticipating the result…and then having it be less than great, or just plain awful?) And finally sitting down for long enough to watch a movie….and not liking the movie (Crazy Stupid Love = just crazy stupid. I should have known better.) And going to bed early enough to get NINE hours of sleep…and then waking up wide awake at 5am. (Are you kidding?)
Overachievers Anonymous: talk to me. I find that in situations like the above in which I do not meet my goals I tend to focus on the lack of goal-meeting rather than on any sort of progress that may have resulted from the failure. So instead of celebrating getting 500 pictures edited in one day – a day in which I also did several other time-consuming things – I lament not getting the remaining 300 pictures that are still unedited done. Does anyone else have this problem?
Can I get an amen?! Or just crickets?
Whether I’m a normal productivity freak or just a plain old freak, I wouldn’t trade the ambitious side of my personality for anything. However (and it’s a big however), I don’t want to constantly come up short in my own evaluations, turning a perfectly good weekend into a sub-par pair of days.
All through the morning the quote “To err is human, to forgive is divine,” has been running through my head. For me, to not achieve everything I want to achieve is normal because of the high standards I set for myself. But to give myself a little grace? That would be truly divine.
So in an effort to facilitate some grace and see the gains instead of the losses, here’s what I truly loved about this weekend:
Spending quality time with THREE good friends
Having real conversations, not just fluffy ones
Getting a DIY project done successfully (post coming soon!)
Finding at least one good new recipe (post also coming soon!)
Getting my car washed (thanks to the many birds who assumed it was their personal restroom)
Not getting a parking ticket after forgetting to move my car to the other side of the street (seriously…THANK YOU)
Editing a substantial chunk of photos
Taking a long walk in the fallen leaves while listening to the Packers game (and cheering uncontrollably in the middle of the street…much to the surprise of the other walkers who were not listening to the Packers game)
Using unexpected extra time in the morning to read this week’s Sports Illustrated
Figuring out how to watch one game on TV, listen to another on my phone, and track a third online
The Packers! Oh, the Packers! For making my heart race unexpectedly in the 4th quarter and pulling out another win to remain undefeated
Football in general
Sitting outside and reading magazines at one of my favorite places
Burning a cinnamon roll candle…it makes the whole apartment smell so wonderful
Listening to CHRISTMAS MUSIC for the first time this year. It’s early, I know, even for me! but it was a necessary and appreciated mood-booster
So that’s that. Stay tuned for posts resulting from aforementioned successes: a fantastic and cheap DIY project and (another) recipe for the pumpkin lovers among us. It’s a good one!
I seriously love football more than I can explain. And to not only love the game, but to love a team like the Packers…it’s a double abundance. Especially when they have a game like they did last night against the Falcons, rallying from 14 points down and significant injuries to get the win. Even though I love the integrity and determination of a team that can beat all of the odds, I think I love the Packers most because of what you’ll see and hear if you watch this video. They’re down to earth. There is no room for drama. They have fun. Favorite moment: the touchdown debate between Aaron Rodgers, Mike McCarthy, and the ref.
I just couldn’t leave this feature behind! So on Sundays, instead of a “dailies” post, I’ll post an inspired list, as per tradition. Here are this week’s picks:
who would have thought the season opener could be BETTER than anticipated?! go pack go!
daily word: “God guards knowledge with a passion, but he’ll have nothing to do with deception.” Proverbs 22:12 (MSG)
daily sweat: just a quick and easy 3 mile run. Nothing fancy today!
daily dish:
breakfast:
PBB&J Oatmeal – Peanut Butter, Banana, and Jelly Oatmeal. So satisfying.
snack:
I love these mini granola bars from Cascadian Farms. They’re the perfect size for a snack or a pre-workout energy boost, which is what this one was today.
lunch:
Frozen banana cream! Love it! And a multigrain cocopop with hummus.
dinner 1:
Oh, yes. HECK yes, I had this beast for dinner! The lovely Lauren and I went to Sugar Mountain Bake Shoppe a few minutes before they opened, figuring that we’d be just in time. But much to our surprise we were met with a line out the door…all the way out to the sidewalk! I guess we weren’t the only ones in the mood for gigantic cupcakes today. I opted for Chocolate Peanut Butter when Autumn Trifle SOLD OUT by the time we got to the counter, and Lauren went for Cakes ‘n Bacon. We were both overjoyed with our selections.
dinner 2:
I’m counting the opening game snack bar as a second round of dinner, since a) my first round was a cupcake and b) there was enough food here to actually make a dinner. Sweet potato waffle fries, popcorn with Parmesan and garlic-infused oil, and chips and salsa.
An appropriate flashback for today! And I can’t hold it in…I have to talk about this. It’s currently the 3rd quarter, and I just witnessed Randall Cobb score on the most amazing return I’ve ever seen. As per Twitter:
I love sports writers on Twitter. I love the NFL. I love my team.
If there’s anything that makes me me, it’s that I love football more than anything…or at least as much as I love the other things that I love more than anything, like food blogs and Pinterest and coffee and magazines. And libraries and books. And fall candles. And holidays.
But really, I love football in amounts for which there are no words. The kind of amounts that lead me to rearrange or cancel plans with actual humans in favor of watching a great game. The kind of amounts that give me ulcers, agony, and incomprehensible joy throughout the season…but mostly joy. Literally, thinking about the season opener tonight makes me giggle. And people…I do not giggle with regularity.
While I would celebrate any game that ushered in the regular season, I’m especially giddy about tonight’s game because, as per tradition, the Super Bowl Champions from the previous year get to host the first game of the season. And this year, the Super Bowl Champions are the Green Bay Packers.
And in case you haven’t heard, I love the Green Bay Packers with a love that knows no bounds.
So basically, I’m on Cloud 1,009 right now. I CAN’T WAIT for tonight’s game against the Saints, and every time I see one of these commercials my enthusiasm grows just a little bit more (and, I might add, I think these are my favorite NFL commercials ever…great music choice on both!):
Just so we’re clear on what’s going down tonight, here’s a very well done Preview by NFL Films. Also, I watched the NFL Films documentary on the 2010 Packers last night, and it was amazing. This is coming from an unbiased viewer, of course, but this clip is definitely worth a watch.
And, just because the reign ends tonight, let’s watch this one more time, shall we?
Friends, life is GOOD! Football is BACK! I’m so excited I’m SHOUTING!
